Do you ever wonder why your breath started to smell bad after the removal of your wisdom teeth? Well, the chances are you are not clearing out all the food particles that remain in your mouth after every meal. Actually, it’s not the food that remains in your mouth create such rotten smell; rather it is a kind of bacteria that make your breath to smell really bad.

Bad breath after wisdom teeth removal is quite common and most often it recovers as the area heals. Most of the people experience bad breath after wisdom teeth removal Sydney, which can be caused due to a number of reasons but it can also be reduced by a number of methods.

Causes of bad breath after a tooth removal
Flow of blood
The extraction site may have occasional bleeding for first two days which can cause both an odour and an unpleasant taste in your mouth. This blood clot and lack of refreshment is the first reason to cause bad breath after tooth extraction.
Tips:
  • After the bleeding stops, sipping water slowly will keep your mouth fresher.
  • Avoid using mouthwash for first 24 hours. Most dentists recommend you to use mouthwash or warm salt water to rinse your mouth only after 24 hours.

Cleanliness

The first couple of days after extraction, you cannot able to brush or floss your teeth thoroughly. Since, it is important that the site should remain undisturbed during initial healing. This can also cause bad breath.
Tips:
Try to brush your teeth using soft bristle tooth brush and make a habit of gargling with Luke warm water.

Pain Medications

Most of the prescribed medicines will fasten the healing process but make your mouth dry and as a result, it causes bad breath.
Tips:
Stay hydrated to get rid of this type of bad breath.
Consume fresh juice to keep your body hydrated and eat healthy foods even after completing the healing process.

Dry Socket

If you notice bad breath or a bad taste after two or four days of wisdom teeth removal, you could have a dry socket.  A dry socket is the occurrence of throbbing pain and it happens when the blood clot comes out of the socket leaving bone and nerve tissue exposed.  Dry socket pain often happens with bad breath and a foul taste in the mouth.

How to Get Rid of Bad Breath
Normally, bad breath caused by wisdom teeth removal will reduce as the wound heal. Seek medical attention if you still notice continuing bad breath, mouth odour or if you find that the site which had wisdom tooth tastes bad after a couple of days.
Here are some ways to help you get rid of bad breath after wisdom teeth removal Melbourne…
  • Use a Water Pick- A water pick can help you to remove food particles from your tooth socket and may help to reduce bleeding and gum disease, but it isn't generally considered to be a substitute for brushing and flossing.
  • Use Antiseptic Mouthwashes- Rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash is an effective way to remove bacteria from your mouth after every meal.
These are the cause of bad breath and if you follow these steps, you can easily get rid of this problem. Be sure to call your dentist if pain or bad breath continues after three days following the extraction.

Hi, I had my wisdom teeth removal surgery end of Feb. It's now end of March and went to the dentist twice after surgery.
Even though I keep my mouth clean, use antiseptic and local anesthetic mouthwash, and went to have my mouth cleaned out twice, I have still got very bad breath.
When I clean out my mouth at night with a toothpick I do notice that food goes into the empty hole where the teeth were.
What can I do to improve this?
I have got kidney infection because of the amount of antibiotics I've been on so any medication is not an option.
Any help please?

Hi Chantell, I have the exact same problem. 3 weeks after extraction and still the same bad smell. It has changed my life. I cannot talk to people let alone kiss my wife. I don't even talk to her when I am near her. Can you tell me if you found a solution and if yes what is the solution? I am super sad from the whole situation. Thank you very much.

I just got my teeth pulled 3 days ago. My breath reeks of blood. Its hard for me to brush because my cheeks are so swollen. I’ve tried the salt water, regular water when I’m drinking it (I roll it around s bit), I’ve even tried switching to the baby toothbrush but I still can’t get in there to brush and inspect. What can I do.? Plz help.!!!

Hi Dori,
I am in the same boat. I am day four recovery. I am 'brushing' most of my teeth coutless times during the day, with a baby toothbrush and salt water rinsing even more often. A few minutes later my mouth feels cloudy and breath makes me shrivel up inside.
I think we may just have to ride the storm and avoid breathing around other people for now!

Hi Dori,
I got my wisdom teeth pulled out a few days ago and experienced similar issues. I contacted my oral surgeon and he suggested using a tongue brush as well as a toothbrush. I found one at my local drug store and it helped get rid of the bacteria and blood that was caught towards the back of my tongue. Although I still notice the odour it has helped improve the scent dramatically. Another observation is that depending on the placement of your stitches the scent could be coming from lingering stitches within the gums. Now I don't suggest poking the stitches but if you keep up with regular salt water rinses you will notice that it will eventually dissolve as you let the water out. The swelling also should go away within a few days and you will soon get a better look at what is going on. Hope some of these suggestions helped, I personally used these and it helped my recovery speed up dramatically.

Had wisdom tooth pulled and dissolveable stitches were placed 7 days ago, which was extremely painful as tooth was on a nerve and very stubborn. I followed all instructions from dentist and my breath smelled and tasted horrible for days after the extraction. I didnt develop dry socket and blood clot stayed in tact. I did the salt water rise throughout the day, used tea bags, brushed regularly, did salt water rinse after meals. Day 7 post extraction, last stitch fell out (2 stitches dissolved) and bad breath immediately disappeared. I placed the stitch in a tissue and smelled it, OMG it stunk to high heaven!!!!! So if you have stitches, this very well may be the culprit.

I am day 5 after my wisdom tooth surgery and the stitches the dentist used are not dissolvable so i have to go back next week and have him take them out. Ever since day 3 my breath and mouth taste and smell bad to the point where i dont even want to talk near family or my fiance. I am scared that the scent will never leave. I am not in pain so i dont think its a dry socket. I know Brittney mentioned the smell left after her stitches dissolved, but has anyone has a similar situation where breath went back to normal but after the dentist took out the non dissolvable stitches?

I made an appt for something else (fillers) in a time i thought id recover, but i want to cancel that appt to this breath issue 😭
