What to Do When Your Teeth Get Knocked Out

Your teeth have the chance of getting knocked out when you indulge in sports activities or get involved in an accident. Such a situation would lead to serious dental emergency and the most obvious advice, is of course to get a dentist right away, but here are some facts that you must be aware of.

What you should do first:

When your teeth get knocked out, you must do the following to prevent further damage:

Handle your tooth/teeth carefully and make sure you do not touch the root because of risk of further damage

It would be advisable to hold the tooth by its crown even if it is dirty and rinse with cold milk

In case you have no access to milk, dip the tooth in water, because the most important thing at the time would be to keep it moist

If you have no access to a glass of water or milk, you can place it on your mouth and store it between the cheek and the gum; however, this is not advisable for young children

If possible, you can also place it back into its socket; but ensure  the tooth faces the right side and you don’t press the tooth into the socket

Now head to the dentist

Placing the fallen teeth or tooth in a container containing cold milk is advisable because it would keep alive the issues attached to the tooth and is also the only way to keep the root surface alive in case you are not in a clinic.  Milk can protect your tooth to an extent because it contains vitamins.

What the dentist would probably be doing

The dentist would first flush out any debris from the socket before he starts with any procedure. Depending on how long your tooth has been out, the doctor would be able to predict the success of your treatment. If you could get to the doctor within one hour of being knocked out, your chance of complete restoration is higher.

If the tooth happens to be broken just above your gum level, the dentist would probably perform a root canal procedure with your permission. This would protect the tooth, its root and surface from any decay. On the other hand, if the fracture is below the gum line, then the broken fragment would be extracted and a new implant would be inserted.

The intended procedure would also be dependent on the age of the patient. If the patient is young, then the bone loss around the jaw area would lead to dental problems and cosmetic issues later on in life.  In such cases, the dentists would do a dental implant as a procedure to prevent against dental loss. Once the restoration is done, it would be advisable to visit the dentist for a review within 3 to 6 months.

What you should do for dental hygiene:

As you probably know by now dental hygiene is very important because lack of it would lead to bad breath, failing health and of course tooth decay. Here are certain procedures that you can perform to keep your dental health:

·        Dental Bridges

·        Dental Fillings

·        Dental Crowns

·        Teeth Whitening

·        Porcelain Veneers
