What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to grow, usually erupting between the ages of 17 to 25 at the very back of the mouth, on the upper and lower gums. Most people will eventually have four wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common dental procedures, with 85% of people requiring this procedure. This is because when wisdom teeth grow, they usually do not grow like other normal teeth. The wisdom teeth get stuck either underneath the gum or only partially erupt through the gum. This is what is known as impaction or ‘impacted wisdom teeth’.

What types are there?

There are four common types of wisdom teeth impactions and these are classified as follows:

Mesioangular impaction – is when the tooth is angled towards the front of the mouth. This is the most common form of impaction making up 44% of all cases.

Vertical impaction – is when the tooth does not fully break out from the gum. This is the second most common type of impaction affecting 38% of cases.

Distoangular impaction – is when the tooth is angled towards the back of the mouth. This only affects 6% of wisdom teeth sufferers.

Horizontal impaction – is when the tooth is angled at a full 90 degrees sideways growing into the roots of the molar beside it. This is the least common form of impaction accounting for only 3% of cases.

What damage can they do?

If left untreated, wisdom teeth can cause further dental complications such as:

·         Infection

·         Bad breath

·         Headaches

·         Toothache

·         Swollen jaw

·         Bleeding gums

·         Cavities

What you should do

We encourage that you visit a dentist or oral surgeon for a consultation so that they are able to provide you with guidance on how complicated the removal will be, cost of the wisdom teeth extraction and the steps you should take before, during and post wisdom teeth removal procedure.
