Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common procedures done by dental surgeons. During the growth of wisdom teeth, most people suffer from pain and discomfort and so dentist suggest wisdom teeth removal. After the wisdom teeth removal procedure, it may take some time for the healing process. It's crucial to know in what way to look after your gums and teeth and help to improve the healing time after surgery. Here, we have collated several ideas to prevent infection or gum disease and speed up the wisdom teeth removal recovery process.

Book a follow-up appointment

It is essential to arrange a follow-up appointment with your dentist to ensure the wound is properly healing and has not been tampered with. Additionally, the dentist should be in the best place to test for any post-removal infection, or underlying problems that can impede recovery.

Keep your head elevated

Try to keep your head up when you are sleeping the first few days after the removal of wisdom teeth. Use pillows to help raise the upper body as close to a 45 degree angle as possible. When sitting on a recliner or lying on pillow covers on your upper body, the goal is to find a comfortable position while elevating your head and shoulders above the heart level. It helps in speed up the wisdom teeth removal healing process.

Warm salt water rinse

Do not rinse your mouth on the first day after the surgery. However, you can do so in the upcoming week. After each meal, a warm salt water solution made of mixing a teaspoon of salt in warm water must be used to scrub and eliminate food particles from the socket. In addition to cleaning the environment, the salt aids kill bacteria by acting as natural pain relievers. A warm salt water rinse can also help avoid developing infections.

Take more rest

You can experience discomfort, swelling and some bleeding after extracting your wisdom teeth. Take some painkillers and/ or antibiotics as recommended by your dentist to help alleviate some discomfort if that is the case. As the recovery period may take anywhere between few days to a week, you need to take more rest to speed up the recovery process.

Concentrate on your diet

You should avoid hot foods and beverages for the first three hours after the operation or at least until all the anaesthetic effects have been washed off. It's recommended that you stop eating food where the stitches are visible at the back of your mouth. You want to prevent needless intervention in dislodging the blood clot at the site of the extracted tooth. You can seek the help of your dentist to know the food to take after the wisdom teeth removal procedure.
