Foods That Strengthen Your Kids' Teeth

Dental visits can be a nightmare at the best of times. With cleaning, fillings, hours spent in the chair, a sore jaw and numb face afterwards. And then you see the size of the bill! Even with a health fund it’s a still a fair hit on the hip pocket or purse.

Raising a family means visits to the dentists for your little ones too. The following list is of foods which will help strengthen your kids' teeth and hopefully prevent and minimise the amount of costly and traumatic dentist visits required!

Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt

Dairy has been well known and documented in the last few decades as being beneficial to overall dental health. Milk, cheeses and yoghurts contain a number of healthy vitamins and minerals one of which is calcium, scientifically proven to help strengthen teeth and bones. Calcium also helps to strengthen teeth as well as mixing with teeth enamel to fight against decaying acids. It can also help to prevent diseases later in life too!

Raw celery, carrots, snap peas, snow peas, cauliflower and green beans

Fresh raw vegetables are never a bad idea when it comes to healthy eating! The act of chewing these crispy and fresh veggies helps to strengthen teeth and jaws and they also help to “brush” the teeth at the same time!

Nuts, sunflower and sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds

These are foods which are good for both you and your kids. These nuts and seeds are chock full of healthy oils, vitamins and minerals as well as positive types of fats. These fats act as shields or guards against enamel decay and are tasty to boot.

Sugar free Gum and Mints

Chewing gum and rolling a mint around promotes the generation of saliva which is highly beneficial to plaque reduction and healthy gum condition. Just be aware that over consumption of these products can lead to stomach and bowel issues and remember to remind your child to dispose of their gum thoughtfully!

As a general rule please limit your kids consumption of processed sugars, fatty food, chocolate, fast food and other food products which are overall detrimental to good health, including dental health! An occasional treat is no problem but any one of any age consuming too much of this type of food is risking their long term health. Also encourage good dental hygiene such as brushing and flossing twice a day and using mouth wash!
