How to Look After Yourself Post Wisdom Teeth Removal

7/11/2014

After making the decision to proceed with wisdom tooth extraction, it is important then to make sure that your after care is in place for a quick recovery without causing additional pain and discomfort.

There are several steps to take to help this course of treatment:

1.      Enlisting the help of a friend or family member during the initial consultations will set your mind at ease that there is someone to rely on and support you post surgery. They can also be there to listen to the advice being given by your oral surgeon including what pain killers can be taken along with driving you to and from the appointment as you will not be able to drive post surgery.

2.      Stock up on soft foods prior to surgery. Easy to eat foods are essential as you may experience some initial discomfort and pain post surgery. Foods such as soups, mash potato, ice cream and jelly all work really well along with fresh juices to get all your nutrients.

3.      Take time off work to recover. By not rushing back to school or work you are giving your body time to recover from the trauma it has been through. If you are too quick to get back to it, you may cause further issues which could result in longer periods of time off.

4.      Leave gauze and rinse mouth with salt water. On the day of surgery, make sure to keep the gauze on for at least 30 minutes to prevent clotting. The day after surgery it is advisable to rinse your mouth with salt water. This helps to prevent irritation and bacteria, as well as improve the healing process.

5.      Use an ice pack or warm towel to ease swelling. On the first to third day using ice packs will help to reduce the swelling on the gums. Your oral surgeon can explain when is best then to move on to a warm towel or heat pack, some time will need to pass to ensure not to create repeat swelling.

6.      Elevate when sleeping to keep the swelling down and blood flow from the tooth to avoid clotting.

7.      Avoid alcohol and smoking is extremely important in the first couple of days so as not to increase the risk of clotting. These elements can also contribute to the resistence of healing.

8.      Return to the dentist. If you are experience pain and soreness that you feel may be more than what you are supposed to experience, contact your dentist. They will be able to provide support and advice and may even suggest coming into the surgery so that they can assess your wound.

Professional dentists are on hand to give you practical advice and information about your post wisdom teeth removal surgery situation. Consulting a well trained oral surgeon and dentist should be a key priority before embarking on any procedures relating to health.

8 Things That Will Happen In Your Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure

6/26/2014

As a patient you have opted to get your wisdom teeth removed as a preventative measure in avoiding wisdom tooth pain, disease and further complications. So, what exactly is involved in the extraction process? Below we outline eight key things that will happen before, during and after your standard practice surgery:

1.      Pre-Surgery – before your extraction you will visit your oral surgeon to speak to them about the process ahead and options regarding surgery

2.      Plan of action – once you have agreed a plan of action for your procedure you will then have x-rays on the teeth that are being removed

3.      Payment plan – For those unable to pay all fees upfront Wisdom Dental can provide a payment plan to help stager the costs of the extraction.

4.      Choice of sleep dentistry – Yourself and the oral surgeon will decide which method is best for extraction, depending on the level that your wisdom teeth are erupted, the pain you are experiencing, the anxiety you may have towards dentistry and how deep they are into the gum and jaw.

5.      The surgery – prior to the surgery you will discuss in depth what will happen and how to look after yourself post surgery including what to eat and how to bathe the teeth

6.      Arrange a person to collect you – The surgery can leave people feeling woozy and you will be unable to drive after the surgery, it is therefore best to arrange for someone to drop you off and collect you. This person should also be in any meeting you may have with your dentist that discusses medication and after care

7.      Rest and warmth – This is incredibly important for a speedy recovery time as well as applying a warm towel to your face to help reduce swelling.

8.      Reduce discomfort – There are many ways to reduce discomfort. Avoiding alcohol and smoking is recommended along with maintaining oral hygiene, taking pain killers and a soft diet.

Wisdom Dental Sydney can give you the best advice for extracting wisdom teeth and your options during surgery. For more information on how to look after yourself post surgery and to book an appointment head to http://www.wisdomteethremovalsydney.com.au/  or call 1800 WISDOM.

The Causes of Wisdom Teeth Pain

The root cause of wisdom teeth pain may seem obvious – your wisdom teeth are erupting and that is why your mouth aches, is sore and swollen. But have you actually considered why that is, when all of your other teeth seem to develop normally and without any issues?

Let’s take a closer look at the life cycle of your teeth.

Your first set of teeth is called deciduous teeth. These are also referred to as your baby teeth, milk teeth or primary teeth. These first start growing as a baby and will finish growing until about 6 years of age. If you have ever watched babies teeth, you will have noticed that they experience discomfort when these first set of teeth start to develop. Developing deciduous teeth can cause mouth pain and swollen gums, not too dissimilar to the discomfort associated with wisdom teeth. However this teething process is normal and doesn’t require any special medical attention such as oral surgery.

These deciduous teeth are then replaced with your second set of teeth, otherwise known as your permanent teeth. You will have experienced your baby teeth falling out – even if you don’t remember. This is normally the stage in which as a child you would have been introduced to the tooth fairy. This happens from about age 6 onwards. Most people will usually have their full set of permanent teeth by 21 years of age.

Your wisdom teeth are the last of your teeth to erupt, and for most people, causes excruciating pain. Why is this? Scientists link wisdom teeth back to the time when our early ancestors foraged for food that were found in forests such as plants, roots, vegetables and other food they had been able to gather. It is believed that we needed all of our teeth, including wisdom teeth, to grind through the sturdy and tough food. Fast forward to the last few centuries where food preparation and cooking have made food softer and easier to eat, and the acceptable theory is that our jaws have evolved, shrinking in size, to the point where we now no longer need the wisdom teeth. As a result, there is no space left for when the wisdom teeth do erupt, and this result in wisdom teeth pain caused by the following issues:

·         Teeth overcrowding – as a result of wisdom teeth growing in such an unhealthy way that it impacts on other teeth, forcing teeth to ‘crowd’ which leads to food being trapped, which can lead to infection. This can also lead to mouth ulcers and cysts as teeth are pushed outwards, rubbing against your inner cheek.

·         Gum disease – as a result of wisdom teeth only partially erupting from the gum line, or trapped beneath the gum line causing inflamed and swollen gums

·         Tooth infection and decay – as a result of not being able to properly brush or floss wisdom teeth, this can lead to bacteria and other food being stuck which causes infection and other mouth problems.

Don’t let wisdom teeth pain overtake your life. Address the problem early on and contact The Wisdom Teeth Professionals, for an oral surgeon in Sydney or Melbourne that can alleviate your suffering and remove your wisdom teeth. Dental Care is More Affordable Than You Think

12/19/2013

In Australia, statistics show that on average 64% of people aged 5 years and over receive oral health and dental care. This means that of the developed world, Australians are more likely to seek advice from a dental or oral surgeon for issues such as tooth decay, wisdom teeth removal and dental appearance.

Although we have some of the highest rates of dental care in the world, many Australians still avoid having to go and see a dental surgeon because they are afraid. They are afraid of the torture they will face when they sit in the chair. They are afraid of the aftermath of getting their mouth seen by a dental specialist, such as the swollen jaw, aching gums, pain and distorted face. More often than not, it is not the physical pain they are afraid of. Increasingly, more Australians are forgoing a visit to the dental office because of the financial costs. With only half of the Australian population with some form of private dental insurance, there is still an alarmingly large number of Australians that aren’t regularly seeking dental care.

At a time where it seems that the cost of living is increasing to the point that many families are struggling with keeping up with the bare essentials, the reality is, dental care is still seen as a luxury and not a necessity. The truth is, however, dental care is not as cost prohibitive as one would think.

There are many dental service providers that offer cost-effective solutions. If you call around to different dental offices, you should be able to obtain these costs easily enough, from initial consultation costs through to basic services such as wisdom teeth extraction. You can also ask family and friends for recommendations on cheap dental providers as they may be able to direct you to a suitable one.

In addition, if you don’t already have private health care insurance, this may be an option that you may want to consider given that many of private health insurers also provide cover for dental procedures and treatments so that you pay less than what you normally would without cover. There are also private health insurance companies who also provide select dental cover options just for dental consultations, fillings and other dental treatment which can cost as little $2.95 per week and covers 60% of the total dental costs.

So if you’re looking for an affordable oral surgeon in Sydney or cost effective wisdom teeth extraction in Sydney, contact the experienced team at The Wisdom Teeth Professionals on 1800 WIS DOM and book yourself in for a consultation that won’t break the bank!

What Influences the Price of Wisdom Teeth Removal

11/17/2013

Picture
Wisdom teeth removal can seem like a daunting and painful exercise in itself and then when the discussion turns to price, it can be downright scary.

But to understand what it is that you are paying for, we’ve put together a list to help you understand the factors behind the price.

The Dentist

Dentistry is no different to any other trade in that like other goods and services businesses, each dentist sets their own pricing structure. Although there are guidelines set by the Australian Dentist Association on what to charge, each dentist will set their price as they see fit. There will be dentists who will naturally charge more than others but there will also be dentists who are more cost-effective.

Type of Extraction

If the wisdom tooth extraction is complicated you should expect that the cost will be more than if the procedure was simple and straightforward. This is because not only will it take longer, but there may be other unforeseen potential complications that will need to be addressed. So in a nutshell, you can expect to pay more if the extraction is a sectional or surgical extraction. If it is a surgical extraction it may also cost more if surgical extraction requires bone removal and splitting the tooth.

The Oral Surgeon

If you require the expertise of an oral surgeon, you may expect to pay a higher price. Specialists generally charge more due to the complexity of the work involved as they may require x-rays as well as the additional services of an anaesthetist, nurses and the hire of a hospital facility.

Private Health Insurance

If you have private health insurance, the amount you pay may be lower as some health funds may cover certain dental items and treatments. We recommend cross checking this with your health fund to ensure you know exactly what will be covered and how much you will be out of pocket if you aren’t.

So if you are looking for the most affordable wisdom teeth removal in Sydney by the best oral surgeon in Sydney, book an appointment with Dr. Pinho and the team at The Wisdom Teeth Professionals on 1800 WISDOM or book online at www.wisdomteethremovalsydney.com.au.

Brushing Teeth after a Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery

5/13/2013

Picture
There is one common question that we always get from our patients after a wisdom teeth removal procedure.

“When can I start brushing my teeth again?”

Well, the general advice would be to wait at least 24 hours after having your wisdom teeth removed but you can actually brush your teeth if you really want to, provided that you apply the proper techniques.

After the wisdom tooth extraction, there will be gauze covering the surgical area. This gauze will need to remain for at least 30 minutes but after it has been taken off you can brush your teeth at any time you want. Just be sure to be extra gentle and careful when you are doing it.

Of course, you won’t be brushing or applying ANY sort of pressure on the extracted area but you can still brush the rest of your teeth with relative ease.

Brushing Your Teeth

1) First of all, you are going to need an extra soft toothbrush so that it won’t be too harsh on the extracted area in case you accidentally bump it with the head of the brush.

2) Apply a very tiny amount of toothpaste onto the brush. Scrub teeth in small, very gentle, circular motions.

3) Be VERY cautious not to bump or brush any part where you have had your wisdom teeth removed. Take your time, there is no rush here.

4) Once you are done brushing, DO NOT spit or rinse your mouth like you usually would. Lean over the sink and slowly let the toothpaste foam fall out of your mouth naturally. Remember, do not spit.

5) Instead of sucking the water into your mouth, gently take a cup and pour water into it so that you can avoid suction.

6) Next, instead of gargling and swishing, gently tilt your head side to side to allow the water to clear off the foam in your mouth.

7) Let the water fall out of your mouth and be sure that you do not spit it out.

When you are done brushing your teeth, get a warm glass of water and add some salt into it. Gently rinse your mouth the same way you did before by tilting your head side to side, and avoid swishing or spitting.

The next time you are looking for expert advice and affordable wisdom teeth removal in Sydney, come visit us today to speak to our friendly staff and surgeons!

Impacted wisdom teeth are also known to affect the surrounding teeth.
