When you have an impacted wisdom tooth, the dentist usually recommends that the tooth is removed as it will cause you discomfort and can affect your oral health. Wisdom Teeth Removal — What is Involved?

When a patient comes with symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth, dentists usually give them all the information they need to decide whether they need to have the procedure carried out.
 
Most people cannot wait to be relieved of the pain and discomfort they feel, so they agree to the removal of the tooth. The procedure will be carried out under local anaesthetic or in some cases, if the patient is still very nervous, sedation can be done. For care where the tooth is already above the gum, it can be pulled out using forceps. Because of the anaesthetics, the patient will not feel the pain. If the tooth is impacted the procedure will involve minor surgery. The surgeon will cut open the gum to expose the tooth and then extract it. In fact, the cheap wisdom teeth removal procedure should not take more than an hour.
 
After Extraction

It is important to follow all the advice given to you by the dentist. It is best that you avoid eating hard or crunchy foods as well as sticky stuff like chewing gum. Wait about 24 hours before you begin brushing the teeth and when you do brush, do it gently especially around the affected area. The dentist will prescribe some painkillers to help as the wound heals and in case of swelling, the dentist will recommend ice packs applied to the area.
 
After the wisdom teeth removal, the dentist will remain on hand to deal with any complication. Complications are rare especially if you follow the advice given. Older patients though can take a longer time to heal than younger ones but dentists always ensure they do the best to avoid any complications.
 
Healing

The wound should heal within a few days from the extraction. If you notice continued bleeding or swelling after 3 to 4 days, then contact the dentist as soon as possible. Also, do not miss your scheduled appointments to ensure the health of the other teeth that remain.
