There will come a point in your life where you will need to know about wisdom teeth removal, when you this will occur, how much it will cost, the procedure and recovery processes. Whether you need them personally removed or because one of your family members needs to undergo the treatment, it’s always good to know the ins and outs and be emotionally and financially prepared.

So let’s get back to wisdom teeth basics.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth that appear, commonly referred to by oral surgeons and dentists as the third molars, these four teeth grow at the back of the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 25.

Why do we need to extract wisdom teeth?

For a majority of the population, wisdom teeth cause a myriad of problems such as:

·         Gum disease

·         Bacterial infections such as pericoronitis

·         Pain

·         Jaw stiffness

·         Tooth decay

·         Tooth ache

·         Crowding or malocclusion of teeth

·         Bleeding

·         Swelling

The worst case scenario if your wisdom teeth are left untreated is that they can cause more severe complications that can cost you a small fortune later down the track such as turning into cysts that can damage bone and gum tissue. Like with general health issues, dental issues need to be treated in the early stages before they become much bigger, and more expensive dental problems.

How do you choose an oral surgeon?

Choosing an oral surgeon to complete the procedure is important so it’s important you choose one who you can trust, afford and provides you with a thorough consultation explaining the entire process clearly and providing advice where needed. It’s also good to go with a recommended oral surgeon or one that you know has had years of experience and practice. Another alternative is to do a quick internet search of local dental practices and read through the online reviews.

What happens during the wisdom teeth removal procedure?

Extracting your wisdom teeth will depend on how deeply impacted your teeth are. Many wisdom teeth can be extracted like any other tooth. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your dentist or oral surgeon will widen the tooth socket and then with a special dental tool such as a forceps, will move the tooth from side to side until it is loose enough to be removed completely.

However, if your tooth proves more difficult to remove, your oral surgeon will cut through your gums and may remove some of your jawbone to reach your tooth. Then they will extract your wisdom teeth and close the wound with stitches if need be.

Recovering from the procedure

The procedure is only a day procedure so you will not be required to stay overnight and even if all four require removal, the procedure shouldn’t take longer than 2 hours. In order to facilitate a quick recovery you should follow these steps:

·         Eat soft foods and mashed foods only – think “baby food” and you get the idea

·         Avoid brushing and flossing in sensitive areas of your mouth

·         Skip mouthwash for the first few days as this may aggravate the pain

·         Try to relax and not overdo as the more rest you get, the quicker you will heal

·         Take pain medication if necessary

What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to grow, usually erupting between the ages of 17 to 25 at the very back of the mouth, on the upper and lower gums. Most people will eventually have four wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common dental procedures, with 85% of people requiring this procedure. This is because when wisdom teeth grow, they usually do not grow like other normal teeth. The wisdom teeth get stuck either underneath the gum or only partially erupt through the gum. This is what is known as impaction or ‘impacted wisdom teeth’.

What types are there?

There are four common types of wisdom teeth impactions and these are classified as follows:

Mesioangular impaction – is when the tooth is angled towards the front of the mouth. This is the most common form of impaction making up 44% of all cases.

Vertical impaction – is when the tooth does not fully break out from the gum. This is the second most common type of impaction affecting 38% of cases.

Distoangular impaction – is when the tooth is angled towards the back of the mouth. This only affects 6% of wisdom teeth sufferers.

Horizontal impaction – is when the tooth is angled at a full 90 degrees sideways growing into the roots of the molar beside it. This is the least common form of impaction accounting for only 3% of cases.

What damage can they do?

If left untreated, wisdom teeth can cause further dental complications such as:

·         Infection

·         Bad breath

·         Headaches

·         Toothache

·         Swollen jaw

·         Bleeding gums

·         Cavities

What you should do

We encourage that you visit a dentist or oral surgeon for a consultation so that they are able to provide you with guidance on how complicated the removal will be, cost of the wisdom teeth extraction and the steps you should take before, during and post wisdom teeth removal procedure.

What Influences the Price of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Picture
Wisdom teeth removal can seem like a daunting and painful exercise in itself and then when the discussion turns to price, it can be downright scary.

But to understand what it is that you are paying for, we’ve put together a list to help you understand the factors behind the price.

The Dentist

Dentistry is no different to any other trade in that like other goods and services businesses, each dentist sets their own pricing structure. Although there are guidelines set by the Australian Dentist Association on what to charge, each dentist will set their price as they see fit. There will be dentists who will naturally charge more than others but there will also be dentists who are more cost-effective.

Type of Extraction

If the wisdom tooth extraction is complicated you should expect that the cost will be more than if the procedure was simple and straightforward. This is because not only will it take longer, but there may be other unforeseen potential complications that will need to be addressed. So in a nutshell, you can expect to pay more if the extraction is a sectional or surgical extraction. If it is a surgical extraction it may also cost more if surgical extraction requires bone removal and splitting the tooth.

The Oral Surgeon

If you require the expertise of an oral surgeon, you may expect to pay a higher price. Specialists generally charge more due to the complexity of the work involved as they may require x-rays as well as the additional services of an anaesthetist, nurses and the hire of a hospital facility.

Private Health Insurance

If you have private health insurance, the amount you pay may be lower as some health funds may cover certain dental items and treatments. We recommend cross checking this with your health fund to ensure you know exactly what will be covered and how much you will be out of pocket if you aren’t.
