Foods That Strengthen Your Kids' Teeth

Dental visits can be a nightmare at the best of times. With cleaning, fillings, hours spent in the chair, a sore jaw and numb face afterwards. And then you see the size of the bill! Even with a health fund it’s a still a fair hit on the hip pocket or purse.

Raising a family means visits to the dentists for your little ones too. The following list is of foods which will help strengthen your kids' teeth and hopefully prevent and minimise the amount of costly and traumatic dentist visits required!

Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt

Dairy has been well known and documented in the last few decades as being beneficial to overall dental health. Milk, cheeses and yoghurts contain a number of healthy vitamins and minerals one of which is calcium, scientifically proven to help strengthen teeth and bones. Calcium also helps to strengthen teeth as well as mixing with teeth enamel to fight against decaying acids. It can also help to prevent diseases later in life too!

Raw celery, carrots, snap peas, snow peas, cauliflower and green beans

Fresh raw vegetables are never a bad idea when it comes to healthy eating! The act of chewing these crispy and fresh veggies helps to strengthen teeth and jaws and they also help to “brush” the teeth at the same time!

Nuts, sunflower and sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds

These are foods which are good for both you and your kids. These nuts and seeds are chock full of healthy oils, vitamins and minerals as well as positive types of fats. These fats act as shields or guards against enamel decay and are tasty to boot.

Sugar free Gum and Mints

Chewing gum and rolling a mint around promotes the generation of saliva which is highly beneficial to plaque reduction and healthy gum condition. Just be aware that over consumption of these products can lead to stomach and bowel issues and remember to remind your child to dispose of their gum thoughtfully!

As a general rule please limit your kids consumption of processed sugars, fatty food, chocolate, fast food and other food products which are overall detrimental to good health, including dental health! An occasional treat is no problem but any one of any age consuming too much of this type of food is risking their long term health. Also encourage good dental hygiene such as brushing and flossing twice a day and using mouth wash!

Dental Care During Your Pregnancy

Being pregnant is a time when you need to pay a lot of attention to yourself and your changing, growing body. Not everything is safe to eat, not every medication is safe to take and not every activity is safe to do. Taking good care of your dental health is an important aspect of your pregnancy, as some women's dental health can suffer while they are carrying their child. Periodontal disease can even trigger premature birth and dental diseases can have a negative impact on your growing child.

This being so, pre-pregnancy dental health is very important, so prior to aiming for a baby make sure to brush and floss twice a day and use mouth wash and maintain regular dentist appointments. Even if you are not aiming for a baby this is a good practice to be in. When you are pregnant make sure that your dentist knows about the pregnancy as their care for you will have to be altered.

Morning sickness can be detrimental to dental health as the bile contained in the vomit is corrosive to enamel and the dehydration caused by vomiting can also have a negative impact on the health of your teeth, mouth and gums. Try not to brush your teeth straight after vomiting, wait an hour or so. Instead, rinse your mouth with tap water, and use some mouthwash or a dab of toothpaste instead.

Although food cravings are strange and powerful forces to contend with, try and substitute the salty, fatty and sugary foods you crave with low fat and low sugar alternatives.

Increased calcium intake is essential to help ensure good dental health, and supplements may be required for those women who are unable to get enough from their diet or those who choose not to consume dairy products for whatever reason. Vitamin D also helps the body absorb calcium efficiently, so an increase in foods containing Vitamin D or another supplement may be called for too.

Smoking while pregnant not only harms your baby, it is also overall bad for your dental health. If you are having trouble quitting please consult your health professional.

Your dentist, GP, midwife and obstetrician are all of good use to you when it comes to advise and support around your overall and dental health before, during and after your pregnancy!

Use the help available and don't be afraid to ask for assistance with what you need, these people's job is to help you in any way they are able to! To speak with a professional dentist with many years experience in the field, get in touch with the Wisdom Teeth Professionals today.
