The Importance of Using Experienced Dentists

Australia is a country far advanced in medical technology, and dental care is not far behind. The quality of dental care and hygiene has accelerated in the past decade, with more and more people approaching dentists for regular dental checkups and treatments. The Government has also played an important role in bringing dental awareness to people. The National Oral Health Plan website says that it is important to maintain good oral health, irrespective of how old you are or where you live.

Though dental care has improved considerably, it is quite important that you get in touch with an experienced dentist to cure all your dental problems.

The experience of a dentist

A dentist with over 15-20 years of experience is always in high demand. If you are willing to spend on your teeth, then you must be ready to invest a little more and get better care.

Trust is an important factor

Meeting with an experienced dentist would help in building trust. From years of experience, he would know how to build confidence in you, how to improve your dental hygiene and how you can lead a healthy life with good teeth. With experience, comes knowledge, the knowledge that he has garnered after treating thousands of patients in his life. With experience, also comes integrity and ethics. Patients look out for a strong sense of integrity and ethics in their dentists. Negative patient experiences turn a person off, so the dentist must be careful to maintain his ethical standards.

An experienced dentist would know how to deal with children

Children are often best handled by experienced dentists. It is not easy to tackle children who are scared about dentist visits, so making them comfortable in the dental chair is quite important. Some parents are of no help because they would be equally nervous and cautious when it comes to children, so it is important to deal with them all with excellent tactic.

A good dentist would understand cultural differences as well

An experienced dentist would also understand the cultural differences in patients and respond accordingly. Study results and research have pointed out that there is a vast difference in the dental outcome of people from different ethnic backgrounds. Some cultures place high-level importance to their dental health, while some cultures are not even aware of the importance of maintaining good dental hygiene. Only an experienced dentist would be able to understand this difference and advice accordingly.  He must be empathic as well because some patients have an increased level of anxiety and express their worries openly. An experienced dentist must have great interpersonal skills so he can relate to his patients in a better way.

Dentists who show kindness to patients are also regarded well.  Patients who visit their dentists are not generally happy, but quite apprehensive about what is going to happen to them. Hence, they would like their dentist to be kind as well, apart from being competent.

Going to the dentist is not a matter of choice; it is a matter of utmost importance because your overall health is dependent on it. A healthy and beautiful smile cannot be obtained from the dentist's office; you have to work on it by following all the rules of dental hygiene. Going to a good dentist would prevent the following health complications in your life:

·         Diabetes

·         Leukemia

·         Oral cancer

·         Pancreatic cancer

·         Heart disease

·         Kidney disease

Apart from seeing the dentist regularly, it is also important to practice oral dental hygiene at home by:

·         Brushing your teeth at least twice a day

·         Using floss regularly to remove plaque from areas that your toothbrush cannot reach

·         Following a healthy diet and avoiding sugary foods

·         Visiting a dentist on a regular basis

Why It's Important to Look After Your Baby's Teeth

7/11/2015

You can start caring for your baby's teeth as soon as you see him sprouting his first tooth. It would be a novel experience for your child, so it is important that you be gentle and understanding with him. Soon, he will be used to the daily routine of brushing/cleaning his teeth in the mornings and evenings.

Taking care of little baby teeth also includes looking after his gums

You can start caring for your baby's gums by wiping them with a piece of gauze or a soft, moist washcloth every day. It is important to wash his gums three times a day. Cleaning his gums would keep off the bacteria and remove the sticky plaque that may stick to the gums. Once he begins to sprout teeth, you can clean them with a soft toothbrush. The toothbrush should have a small head and a large handle.

Many parents neglect to take care of their baby's first teeth because they are temporary, and hence are not important enough. Your baby's first teeth are equally important because they preserve the spacing for the permanent ones. If the temporary ones are not looked after properly, they would eventually lead to gum infections, like gingivitis for instance, and this would affect the permanent teeth as well. Avoid the occurrence of cavities because that is equally bad. To avoid cavities stop giving him the bottle (especially when there is a sugary drink inside it, but plain water is fine) during the bedtime.  If your baby has eaten sticky or sugary foods, then clean his teeth gently with a toothbrush or a thimble-like cleaner.

The ideal age for visiting a dentist

Irrespective of whether your baby has problems with his teeth or not, you must take his first visit to the dentist by his first birthday. The dentist would give you advice on how to look after your baby's teeth, what to do in case of thumb sucking, how to maintain dental hygiene and give general awareness about teething and teething problems.

Once the little pearls start showing itself

It is better to avoid sugary drinks in a bottle. If you want to give his fruit juices, ensure he doesn't take it to bed. If you want to give your baby something to drink before he sleeps, make sure it is just water. Also avoid dabbing the pacifier with honey and other sweet things because it would cause the bacteria to attack on his gums. Avoid sweetening his milk too much because the sugar can settle on his teeth and this would lead to acid attack causing the teeth to decay right when it sprouts itself.

Preparing your baby for his first dental visit

By the time your baby is one, he would begin to be wary of strangers, so you must be prepared to deal with adverse circumstances when you take your baby for his first dental visit. Your baby who enjoyed and charmed his way through the waiting room would probably be a curled ball of terror when he sees all the fancy equipments in the dentist's room, especially if he had seen you struggling with your own teeth.

Choosing a kid-friendly dentist is important. Let the child accompany you when you visit your own dentist. It would help the child relax in the room and understand that no life-threatening situation is going to happen within the room. You can also observe how staff handles little children in the room and this would help you decide to go with the dentist or not.

The dentist's room must be prepared in such a way that it should seem welcoming for the child. And cleanliness is of paramount importance.
