Myths and Facts About Wisdom Teeth

Out of all our teeth - wisdom teeth are known to cause the most trouble. They have the potential to crack and cause an enormous amount of pain, but many of us don’t really understand them. So let’s take a look at a few of the myths associated with wisdom teeth, and whether or not our assumptions of them are actually true.

Assumption #1: Wisdom Teeth Will Always Need to Be Removed

While it is common to have your wisdom teeth removed, it’s not always completely necessary. Chances are if your wisdom teeth are nice and healthy, you won’t need to have them removed. Having said this, if there are any complications – such as eruptions or breakages – there is the potential for the build up of bacteria to cause swelling, pain and stiffness.

Assumption #2: Wisdom Teeth Should Be Removed Prior to Orthodontic Treatment

It’s rarely necessary that wisdom teeth need to be removed before orthodontic treatment. Of course, it does depend on the circumstances. Often, a wisdom tooth can cause your other teeth to shift, which can become a hindrance for your dentist during surgery – so it is best to speak with them first if you have any concerns.

Assumption #3: Ice Cream is Good for You after Having an Extraction

Fortunately, this is actually a fact. The coldness of the ice assists in reducing gum swelling, which makes sense. It’s soft too, so this helps – but just remember not to use a straw, otherwise you may dislodge the clots which are a result of the wisdom teeth surgery.

Assumption #4: You Can Always See Your Wisdom Teeth

Just because your wisdom teeth are not visible it doesn’t mean they’re not there. Wisdom teeth are often enclosed into the jaw bone – or soft tissue. This is why dentists usually conduct x-rays to check your wisdom teeth to make sure they are actually there and growing properly.

Assumption #5: We Get Our Teeth During ‘The Age of Wisdom’

We certainly do! In fact, our wisdom teeth usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25 – and that’s why this is known as the age of wisdom. However, this is only ‘if’ we get them. Around 35 percent of people don’t actually get wisdom teeth at all!

Do you have yours?

Are you having any problems with your wisdom teeth? If so, it makes sense to go and see a dentist as soon as possible, otherwise problems could escalate into something severe. Bacteria can build up, which usually results in an infection.

Wisdom Teeth Removal can help you with any queries that you might have regarding the removal of your wisdom teeth. Get in touch today and we will be happy to answer any questions.

Dental Care for Children

From the time they are young babies, right up until the time they’re adults, it’s vital for you to educate your children on the importance of dental care. It will make a significant difference to how healthy they are and how well they transition from the phase of being a young adult, to a mature adult.

Even if they aren’t aware of it, teeth are actually one of your child’s most prized possessions. What this means is that not only should they care about their teeth, they should also know how to protect their teeth from things that can cause harm.

Let’s take a look at a few of the most important topics to consider when thinking about your child’s dental health.

Importance of Tooth Protection

From even the youngest of ages, you should keep in mind that it is not good for your child’s teeth to send them to bed with a bottle in their mouth while they drift off to sleep. Whether it’s juice, milk or baby formula, the sugar contained in these liquids can cause decay if the bottle stays in the baby’s mouth for too long.

When your baby has reached the age of 1, this is generally a good time to stop giving them a bottle, while they learn to use cups instead. When you give your children health snacks and treats – including drinks – this is going to lessen the likelihood of getting tooth decay, due to the decrease amount of sugar.

More importantly, check their child’s teeth regularly by lifting their lip to look for signs of tooth decay. Look for white chalky substances near the gum – or brown spots.

Use Fluoride to Prevent Decay

Naturally found in the earth and the water, Fluoride helps by preventing tooth decay both before and after teeth come through. A considerable amount of scientific research has been conducted and has found that there are actually no health problems caused by fluoride – whether it’s from water or toothpaste.

To find more about fluoride, check out this fact sheet from the South Australian Dental Health Promotion Unit.

Spit Toothpaste Out (Don’t Swallow)

Brushing teeth twice a day is one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay. However, you should teach your children to spit the toothpaste out after brushing, rather than swallowing it. Ensure they don’t rinse their mouth out afterwards either, as this gets rid of the fluoride protection. Research suggests that children between 18 month and 5 years old swallow toothpaste rather than spitting it out.

Regular Dental Checkups

Perhaps the most important tip to remember when considering your child’s dental care is to visit the dentist for regular checkups. This way you can stay updated on how their dental health is progressing, and quickly fix any problems should they arise.
