Surviving Wisdom Teeth Removal

Opting to have wisdom teeth removal is a big decision, one that you have taken time on to consider all options. Now you have decided to have the surgical procedure there are a few things to do in order to prepare for your surgery and afterwards.

Prior to the surgery

Rest and relaxation is the key to ensuring you are prepared for surgery, no matter how fit and well you feel, your body will be put through a “trauma” that it hasn’t expected. Making sure that you get plenty of rest in the run up to the wisdom teeth extraction will. A full consultation will be completed by your oral surgeon, eliminating any worries you may have surrounding wisdom teeth pain, the surgery and any anxieties you might have. The team at your surgery will be fully qualified and experienced to deal with any questions you may have. They will also be able to inform you of whether you are able to eat and drink prior to the surgery depending on what type you are having.

Planning and preparation

A plan needs to be put in place for the day of your surgery and afterwards. Asking a family member or a friend to drive you to and from the surgery will give you one less thing to worry about. They can also sit in the consultation with your oral surgeon to know which medication you should be taking and when. Making sure you wear comfortable clothes during surgery is essential as well as buying the right soft foods to have after the surgery e.g. ice cream, jelly, milkshakes, soup and water.

Post Surgery

After the surgery you may experience some pain depending on the type of wisdom teeth extraction you have had. You may experience some swelling and a dull ache in your face. Ice is recommended for 1-2 days after the surgery in order to minimize the swelling to the face, you can normally attach the ice to your face with a sling to keep it in place. The dentist will have prescribed you with pain killers, having this written down prior to the surgery will ensure you don’t get your medication wrong. Rest and relaxation after your surgery is also vital as you need to allow your body to recover. Again having a family member or friend help you is important to your recuperation.

Listen to the experts

Make sure to follow your oral surgeon’s post op care, they are equipped with the knowledge to make your after experience as pain free as possible. Gauze is supplied by your surgeon which is to be changed very 1-2 hours; if the gum is still bleeding after a day it is best to consult your dentist. Their advice will aim to prevent clotting and dry sockets that you may encounter post surgery.

Does Wisdom Teeth Removal Really Hurt?

Wisdom teeth removal is performed by dental professionals that have a wealth of experience and training regarding dental removals.  There are there are several methods that can be applied in order to minimise the recovery time of the removal of wisdom teeth for a low pain extraction.

Prior to removal, your dental surgeon will discuss the procedure at length with you to give you all the information about what you can expect. Once you have provided them with all of the information they need including wisdom teeth pain, any allergies, questions or concerns, you can then proceed to the next step. An examination by your dental surgeon or oral surgeon along with an OPG X-ray will be the second part of the process.

Conditions can affect how easily your wisdom teeth can be removed, including what stage your root development is at and how the tooth is positioned. An impacted tooth can be more complicated and may require sedation or general anaesthesia to allow your dental surgeon to remove the tooth or teeth.

When speaking with your dental surgeon, they will advise you on modern techniques and anaesthetic options for painless wisdom teeth procedure, here are a few of the options:

-          Anaesthesia means loss of sensation. The procedures can also be done with or without help of sedation. Local Anaesthesia is a nerve block and numbs the part of the body where the procedure is to be performed. It is done in the clinic and you are awake and free of pain. It is advisable to have a normal meal before wisdom teeth removal surgery under local anaesthetic.

-          General Anaesthesia is performed at hospitals equipped with the safest and latest dental and medical technology for tooth extraction and wisdom teeth removal surgery. The anaesthetist puts the patient in a state of carefully controlled unconsciousness by constantly monitoring and adjusting the level of anaesthesia.

-          IV Sedation is usually performed in the clinic and patients are usually sedated by the anaethetist in the dental chair. IV sedation or so called sleep dentistry induces a state of deep relaxation. Drugs used for IV sedation produce partial or full memory loss (amnesia) for the period of time when the drug first in administered until it wears off.

-          Penthrox Sedation is an alternative to General Anaesthesia and IV sedation and can provide pain and anxiety relief during tooth extraction and wisdom teeth removal surgery. Penthrox is a combination of an inhaler device and a pharmaceutical agent that has extremely safe record and has been used in Australia for over 30 years by healthcare professionals.

At Wisdom Dental Sydney we are committed to providing a safe and pain free procedure, giving you the advice you need to feel comfortable and confident.
