Infected wisdom teeth are painful and potentially dangerous too! If you had ever come across people who were suffering from a painful wisdom teeth infection in Sydney, then they will tell you it’s best to avoid this situation altogether. In most cases, the pain associated with a wisdom tooth infection can be extreme and should be treated quickly to avoid further complications.

How Wisdom Teeth Gets Infected?
Partial eruption of wisdom teeth creates a flap of gum tissue near the tooth which traps the food particle and form plaque & bacteria which in turn may result in a wisdom teeth infection. These infected wisdom teeth can cause big troubles to your oral health and hence it’s suggested undergoing wisdom teeth removal in Sydney. Here is a whittled list of the symptoms and signs of wisdom teeth infection.

Serious Signs and Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth Infection
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Bad odor
  • Pus discharge from the gum near the tooth
  • Swollen and painful gum tissue
  • Difficulty in chewing
  • Swollen face
  • Muscles spasm in the jaw
  • Swollen lymph glands under the jaw

How to Prevent It?

Regular brushing and flossing helps you to avoid wisdom teeth infection by preventing food and bacteria building up under the gums. In complex cases, these steps may not work, so you have to remove the flap of gum tissue.

Prescribed Treatment
To treat the infected teeth, dentists often recommend antibiotics that relieve the pain and discomfort caused by infected wisdom teeth. Using salt water to rinse your mouth helps you to speed up the healing process and prevents bacterial build up under the gum. The flap of gum tissue that won’t go away until the wisdom tooth emerges naturally can be removed with the help of the oral surgeon while performing wisdom teeth removal in Sydney.

One of the most common questions regarding wisdom teeth removal in Sydney is how long the patient should wait to exercise or resume their sports activities after going through the procedure. As you all know, based on the complexity of the procedure, each wisdom tooth extraction process is difficult and the corresponding recovery time varies. In many cases, most of the people get back to their normal routine within two days because there were only minor side-effects immediately following the extraction. But, in some cases, attempting to resume your regular physical activities and sports can dislodge or aggravate the blood clot in your gum. If it occurs, it lengthens your recovery time and cause increased discomfort. So, here we have compiled a list of information regarding the period of time required to resume your normal physical activities after your oral surgery.

Physical Activities – Limitations
For the first twenty four hours after the surgery, physical activities must be strictly avoided because this time is the first critical stages of healing process. In common, the level of discomfort will be the most severe for 2 days after the tooth extraction. So, oral surgeons recommend patients to take a complete rest on bed and avoid physical activities. This includes most strenuous work like exercise, bending, heavy lifting and more.

Sports
Many people question that can they return to their regular sport activities after 48 hours of healing. But, obviously, the answer is no! It is not wise at all to get straight back to your normal level of physical activities or sports participation in just two or three days after experiencing oral surgery. Instead, return slowly for regular cardiovascular exercise step by step for a few days and then shift to running laps, sprints, or basic conditioning.

The Bottom Line
Don’t push yourself for any risky physical activities and stay away from any contact of sports in order to avoid getting hit in the face or mouth. Watch out for any increased pain or hurting during a physical activity and if so, stop it immediately and talk to your oral surgeon in Sydney to make sure everything went right!

When wisdom teeth erupts and gets impacted, it does start to show symptoms such as toothaches, swelling, red gums and more. However, it doesn’t end up just there. There might come up other problems and symptoms that might seem unrelated, but the fact that they are actually caused by wisdom teeth can be pretty daunting. Find out what they are in this list below:

Jaw Pain and Stiffness:
When there’s an impacted wisdom tooth, you will notice that your jaw feels stiff and it hurts while munching on foods that are hard to chew. The impacted wisdom tooth can create pressure on your jaw, thus leading to pains.
Impacted wisdom teeth also create wounds, which can lead to infections. This is the reason behind pains and swelling.

Gum Disease or Infection:
Impacted wisdom teeth can pierce through the surface and will lead to the development of what is called as deep pockets in the gums. Food particles will accumulate here, which will then be hard to remove with normal brushing. This slowly rots and causes infections. This might also push away your gums from the teeth, leading to periodontal gum disease. This can also be seen even amongst those who take up good oral hygiene measures as well.

Movement of Other Teeth and Pains
Most impacted wisdom teeth can grow sidewards and move towards its neighbouring teeth. This leads to over-crowding and also makes the rest of your teeth to shift. So, the pain is not just limited to wisdom teeth but can be in the neighbouring teeth and jaw as well. Any such kind of pain can be sign that indicate your wisdom tooth have to be removed at the earliest.

Tooth Decay:
Crowded teeth is not just about pains and the damage it causes to aesthetics, but it can also be a cause for tooth decay as well. When your teeth get crowded, it gets harder for us to clean the teeth properly and as a result, dirt and food particles will remain accumulated. When your tooth is straight, it gets easy to reach every side of your teeth and there’ll even be a space between your teeth for effective flossing. However, if it gets too close, flossing becomes nearly impossible.

Cysts:
Cysts might also show up around your impacted wisdom teeth. Cysts refer to fluid-filled sacs which are most likely caused due to the pressure exerted by impacted wisdom teeth in order to erupt through the gums. Cysts when developed can cause intense damage to the surrounding teeth, therefore they will have to be surgically removed. The best means to prevent formation of cysts is to remove wisdom teeth at the earliest.

Wisdom teeth that are impacted are sure to cause any of the above mentioned problems, even if it doesn’t cause any pain. If you encounter any of these issues, consult with a surgeon experienced in wisdom teeth removal in Sydney.

Learning what to expect after undergoing oral surgery can help you quicken your journey towards a speedy recovery. Proper post-operative care is very important for any kind of surgery and the same does apply for oral surgery too. In this article, we have listed a few important tips to follow to avoid the unnecessary pain and complications after wisdom teeth removal in Sydney.
  • As the local anaesthetic wears off, the pain doubles and causes severe discomfort. So, take the prescribed medications at the scheduled time to avoid any inconvenience after surgery.
  • Bleeding, oozing or redness in saliva is common after oral surgery and biting down moist gauze packs can control bleeding. You can also use moist tea bags to reduce bleeding because tea contains tannins, which is an astringent that can help form a clot by shrinking blood vessels.
  • Avoid strenuous activities at work or play for at least 1 week and take full rest during the first 24 hours after oral surgery. This minimises pain, swelling and bleeding to a large extend.
  • Apply ice packs against the swollen area for at least 24 to 72 hours to reduce the impact of swelling.
  • Eat soft foods like soups, mashed potatoes and gravy, polenta, macaroni & cheese, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies that are easy to chew.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, Gatorade and nutritional drinks.
  • Avoid smoking and use salt water to rinse your mouth several times per day to help in the healing of tissues and minimize the risk of infection.
Also, gentle brushing is recommended after wisdom tooth removal in Sydney for faster healing and be mindful to take extra precaution near the surgical site not to irritate the wound.

Wisdom Teeth Removal – Survival Checklist

Wisdom teeth, ironically isn’t anything wisdom. As soon as they erupt, they are often impacted or they grow sideways. And it gets only worse when they are infected. This is when wisdom teeth removal becomes a necessity. Keep tabs on the symptoms and take necessary steps to analyse if wisdom teeth removal is necessary. If your dentist has advised to have your wisdom teeth pulled, this checklist will help you prepare for it.

1)  Have Food (When necessary)

If your surgeon has planned to offer you sedation or general anaesthetic, don’t ignore to follow the pre-operative instructions provided by them. Do NOT drink (including water) or eat anything for 8 hours before surgery. On the other hand, if you’re about to be given local anaesthetic, have light meals 1 or 2 hours before surgery.

2)  Wear Appropriate Dress

Wear loose, short-sleeved dressing for surgery. It’s true that your surgeon will take appropriate care in avoiding any stains falling on your clothes, but it’s worth wearing something that you aren’t much concerned about. Don’t wear jewellery as you will be asked to remove it. Since your eyes will remain closed during surgery, avoid wearing contact lenses. Don’t wear makeup too.

3) Plan for Transportation and Care:

You will have to arrange someone who can accompany you before and after surgery. Chances are that the effect of anaesthesia will make it hard for you to drive your vehicle by yourself. The person accompanying you can also take care of your children during the recovery period.

4) Take Music Along with you
Oral surgery will not be painful as you shall be administered with a local or general anaesthetic. However, most of them are quite often intimidated with oral surgical procedures and this is when music becomes their best companion. Listening to music can reduce anxiety levels and eventually, you’ll be ready for the procedure.

5) Stock up on Post-Op Foods:

Once the wisdom teeth removal procedure is done, you cannot simply rely upon any food right away. Limit yourself to soft and easy-to-chew foods that don’t strain the surgical area. Also avoid spicy and acidic foods that can irritate your gums. So stock up on smoothies and ice creams. (Don’t go overboard with icecreams, though). Remember not to depend on straws while drinking fluids as they can create dry sockets. Here is a list of foods to depend on:
  • Pudding
  • Jello
  • Yogurt
  • Ice Cream
  • Soup
  • Smoothies & Shakes
  • Applesauce
One of the simplest rules to follow with regard to wisdom teeth removal is to not panic. As the oral surgeon offers you sedation or anaesthesia, the procedure becomes a painless experience for you. Be informed that you’ll have swelling and pains after surgery, which is normal and will subside over time.
